This morning, kitchen staffer Bruce Carpenter directed our thoughts around the flagpole prior to breakfast. Being Independence Day, he pointed out how this is the only “true American holiday.” On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed, declaring war with the British nation. It has been said that “freedom is NOT FREE.” There has been tremendous loss and sacrifice since the birth of our nation–every generation has had military conflict. Here at MSC, we have some military veterans and some going into the military to serve and sacrifice: Purple Team Captain Rick Knight served in the Army, kitchen staffer Jeremy Goen retired from the Air Force, and Last Year Camper Levi Haymaker and Logan Rees plan to enlist in the Navy. Jesus is the ultimate servant when He was sacrificed on the cross for each and every one of us.
In Romans 13:1-3 we read that God has ordained government and “whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.” Our founding fathers founded our country based on God’s law, but unfortunately our country has strayed from godliness in many ways. We must stand up and teach God’s word–let your voice be heard. God’s Law is superior to the laws of the land today.
Our camp theme this week, “God Fits,” comes from Psalm 119:11: “Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” Joshua 1:8,9 tells us that God’s “law shall not depart out of thy mouth.” We must constantly defend God and His Word, and to do so, we must put on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-20). We must stand, gird our waist with truth, put on the breastplate of righteousness, shod our feet with the preparation of the Gospel, have a shield of faith, wear the helmet of salvation, and carry the sword of the Spirit. “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (I Corinthians 15:57).
To close out our flagpole devotion, we all sang “The Battle Belongs to the Lord.”
