Luke Capps did a fantastic job of leading our Monday evening Bible Study. The below outline is what he walked the Camp through:
2Tim 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Timid: Showing the lack of confidence or easily frightened.
Biggest regret is not taking more about Jesus in High School. Jesus said the purpose of life is to preach the gospel and spread the kingdom. Sometimes it is uncomfortable, the message is without God you are hopeless and helpless. This lesson needs to be expressed in a loving way.
Convictions. Those in the world will think you hate sinners, but we love the person. Jesus said to love one another. We should stand out and tell the world that we are Christians. Don’t be scared to talk about the Bible. Sin is keeping some people from God. There are eternal consequences to sin.
Romans 11: 20Yes, but remember—those branches were broken off because they didn’t believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen. 21For if God did not spare the original branches, he won’t spare you either.
Philp 2: 12So then, my dear ones, just as you have always obeyed [my instructions with enthusiasm], not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation [that is, cultivate it, bring it to full effect, actively pursue spiritual maturity] with awe-inspired fear and trembling [using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ]. 13For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure.
There’s an appropriate and inappropriate amount of fear. Fear is a natural response and it can be use corruptly in a way that will take you away from God. The example of Abraham is the person you want to be like. He believed in God and acted on that belief.
Gen 12: 17But the Lord punished Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her and go!” 20So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they escorted him on his way, with his wife and all that he had.
He had fear that caused him to do something corrupt. Some may say the Bible is bias. If you are going to write a story about yourself, why would you talk about your failures?
Matthew 8: 23When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24And suddenly a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves; but Jesus was sleeping. 25And the disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us, we are going to die!” 26He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was [at once] a great and wonderful calm [a perfect peacefulness]. 27The men wondered in amazement, saying, “What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
Matthew 14 27But immediately He spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I! Do not be afraid!”
Luke 12: 5But I will point out to you whom you should fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority and power to hurl [you] into hell; yes, I say to you, [stand in great awe of God and] fear Him!
If you aren’t a Christian, then that won’t compare the fear you will have when stand at judgement.
