This morning, Sports Director Sean Walker introduced us to our daily theme during his flagpole devotion: “More Than Conquerors: Justified.” He began by defining justify–innocent; pure; fair; honorable; redeemed; righteous. Romans 8:30 – “…and whom He called, them He also justified….” He went on to answer three questions:
- Why are we justified?
- We are separated from God when we sin, just like Adam & Eve were when they sinned in the Garden of Eden. Romans 5:12 – “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
- All have sinned (Romans 3:23) and the “wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23)
- God created us all with free will and choice
- Our choices can make us impure, guilty, and in need of justification
- How are we justified?
- We are justified through God’s grace and mercy
- Throughout the scriptures, God’s plan unfolds and points to Christ. Romans 5:9 – “Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.”
- Galatians 3:24 – “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”
- Titus 3:7 – “That being justified by His grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
- Christ paid the price for each of us. We are justified through faith and obedience.
- What does justification mean to us today?
- Life is full of opportunities and challenges
- Peace comes from being justified
- God’s love exceeds more than we can comprehend (Ephesians 3:17-19)
- God wants us to thrive in Him
- Romans 8:16,17 – “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.”
- There is power in purity, obedience, and faith
- We are called to be justified, and justified to glorify God
- We are “More Than Conquerors” through Christ
- Nothing separates us from God — “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38,39)
